Here's a little book I love: Alphabet City, a collection of picture postcards by Cynthia Maris Dantzic.  Based on signs in New York, it offers 26+ photographs of graphic genius to be seen on store signs.  Cynthia comments on the typical New York "clever silliness, the in-your-face bravado..."

The Mid East flavor of this restaurant logo “Sahara”
is emphasized by the H made of two palm trees and a
hammock. AND in case its ethnicity might be in doubt,
the sign includes a drawing of the owner, wearing a fez.
As the photographer says, "Alas, these charming documents of the playful inventiveness that marks the New York spirit are fast disappearing, often replaced by newer, more sophisticated typography or sleek plastic signage.  They will be missed."

The book is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and from Cynthia Maris Dantzic herself.  Enjoy!  And keep your eyes open in your own neighborhood. These little gems are all around you.

  1. I first bought your book "Learn Calligraphy" about four or five years ago. I'm so excited to see you're still "in the biz". I'll always be a fan and thank you for the insightful and excellent lessons in your book. I didn't know you had a "Learn World" calligraphy book, so I will buy this soon! Thanks again Miss(us) Shepard!
